FLiCKERFEST 2016 PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Friday 22nd Jan, Best Of International 1 programme, highlights includes:

OH-BE-JOYFUL
United Kingdom / 14 min / 2015
WRI: Kayleigh Llewellyn
DIR: Susan Jacobson
PROD: Katie Campbell
On her birthday, the last thing Sophie (Kayleigh Llewellyn) wants to do is care for her wheelchair-bound grandmother, Rita (Sheila Reid). However, Rita is a lot sharper than her granddaughter thinks. Determined for Sophie to come to terms with her sexuality, the ever-cheeky Rita drags her to the supermarket, leaving smashed mandarins and garlic in their wake. It’s an endearing moment of bonding between the two, despite the generation gap. Oh Be Joyful is a heart-warming tale of love, family and acceptance.

AUTOS PORTRAITS (CARFACE)
Canada / 4min / 2015
DIR: Claude Cloutier
PROD: Julie Roy
Carface is a whirling, twirling automotive waltz. To the tune of “Que Sera, Sera,” carefree cars cavort in all directions while the black ooze that fuels them is unremittingly pumped from Mother Earth. The ultimate orgiastic spectacle of our Big Oil–based empire. Let the games begin! The impact is all the more heightened by the film’s outlandish cartoon imagery. Shortlisted for best animated shorts category at the Oscars, Cloutier’s film is a biting commentary of a world threatened by climate change and declining natural resources.

Saturday 23rd Jan, Best Of Australian Shorts programme, highlights include:

NAN AND A WHOLE LOT OF TROUBLE
Australia / 11min / 2015
WRI: Sue McPherson
DIR: Dena Curtis
PROD: Lois Randall (From Lennox Head)
Shot in Lismore, Tullera and Wardell Northern NSW. A whole lot of fun and set in ‘well groomed suburbia’, Dena Curtis’s film is a charming comic drama about a family in a spot of trouble. Nan (Noeleen Shearer), and granddaughter Fuzzy (Amba-Rose Atkinson) of Aboriginal and Irish descent, face off with Aunty Min (Pamela Young) after the passing of a close relative. Nan keeps a photo album of dead family members. Younger sister Min believes this morbid European tradition is culturally inappropriate. Told with warmth and humour, this fun short film tackles cultural taboos and indigenous tradition.

FLAT DADDY
Australia / 16min / 2014
WRI / DIR: Matt Holcomb
PROD: Annie Kinnane
Life-size cut-outs of soldiers away in combat are used by military families to cope with their loved one’s absence. Eating dinner at the table with a life-size cut-out of your dad isn’t exactly ordinary. But for Kate (Kat Stewart) and daughter Cindy (Sophia Tsoltoudis), it’s their only way to fill the void while their absent father and husband Scott (Christian Clark) is on military duty. Based on an award-winning short story by Louise D’Arcy, Flat Daddy is a heartbreaking examination of the ups and downs of family in emotional upheaval. With a soaring orchestral score by acclaimed Australian composer Guy Gross (The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert), it will catapult you on a journey of love and perseverance in the face of hardship. (starring Kat Stewart and Kathryn Beck)

ERNIE BISCUIT
Australia/ 20min / 2015
WRI/DRI/PROD Adam Elliot (Harvie Krumpet)
The charming clayography of a lonely Deaf Parisian Taxidermist whose life is turned upside down and back to front when a dead pigeon arrives on his doorstep.
Adam Elliot (Oscar Winner ‘Harvie Krumpet’) is known for his quirky humanist and humorous animations dealing with the outsider and Ernie Biscuit is another delightfully warm and uplifting addition to his short film collections.

Sunday 24th Jan, Short Laughs Comedy programme, highlights include:

NULLA NULLA
Australia / 6min / 2014
WRI/DIR: Dylan River
PROD: Tanith Glynn- Maloney
Fresh out of the academy, White Cop experiences his first taste of Aboriginal community life, as Black Cop puts him to the test.
Winner of the AACTA award for Best Australian film this delightful comedy starring award winning director/actor Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Redfern Now) takes us to a remote where a new white cop is hilariously introduced to local culture.

HALFBEARD
Australia / 7min / 2015
WRI/DIR: Luke Ryan
PROD: Julian Vincent Costanzo, Marcello Ianno
Gavin is a comedy actor who wants to be taken seriously. That’s why he’s grown a beard. Now Gavin is about to make the crossover into drama. But first he needs to find a razor… Actor Luke Ryan’s hilarious short is a quirky take on hipsters and the latest beard trend.

5th Arakwal NAIDOC Film Festival & Arakwal Web Launch

Cape signing

Wednesday, July 4th 2012
Byron Bay Community Centre
4.00pm – 5.00pm:
Arakwal Website Launch

6.30pm – 8.30pm:
‘Walking With My Sisters’ (PG), & excerpt from the sequel ‘Back To Country’
Tickets @ door only: $8 / $6 conc

In celebration of the 20 year anniversary of MABO, and NAIDOC Week 2012 the Arakwal people of Byron Bay are pleased to invite you to a historic retrospective screening of WALKING WITH MY SISTERS filmed between 1994 & 1998, an intimate human drama, which follows their own process of Native Title, through the story of their elders, the traditional Arakwal custodians of the Byron Bay area and their battle to prove their connection to the land where they grew up.

Director Bronwyn Kidd met the sisters in December 1994, shy at first they were now starting to talk about their history in the coastal community of Byron Bay, North Coast NSW. In May the following year they made a bold step for them. They lodged their Native Title claim in order to finally have some real say over their traditional country.

Edie Mabo’s landmark case two years before meant that Australian law finally recognised that aboriginal people occupied the land prior to Europeans and the Arakwal sisters were finally given hope that they too could continue to care for country and build a sustainable future for generations to come.

Screening alongside ‘Walking With my Sisters’ will be an excerpt from the sequel ‘Back To Country’ (2000-2012) screening publicly for the first time also directed by Bronwyn Kidd and currently in production.

‘In Back To Country’ we now follow the next generation of family who have moved home to fight for their elders dreams. Their vision is to live, work and create a sustainable economic future in Byron Bay for the many generations of their people to come.

The Arakwal people have achieved once of the most successful Native Title claim outcomes in mainland Australia through a series of historic Indigenous Land Use Agreements that included in 2001 an Australian first, the creation of a new national park, (Arakwal national park), joint managed by the Arakwal people of Byron Bay and the New South Wales National Parks Service.

The films produced over 18 years represent the longest recording of a Native Title process in mainland Australia and will be followed by a Q and A with the Arakwal people and the filmmaker Bronwyn Kidd.

Prior to the screening the Arakwal people will launch their brand new website sharing information about current projects, culture and caring for country.

The angel of death is the most misunderstood of all angels.
He attends sessions with a psychiatrist, seemingly depressed.
While still carrying out his eternal duties of attending death and helping souls with afterlife options he also dabbles in the odd cause of death.
Eventually he presents a radical solution to the psychiatrist: the surgical removal of his wings is the only way, he informs her, that he can have a ‘normal’ life.
In reality he gains great pleasure from his work and the reality is that the psychiatrist is on life support after a car accident and he is simply waiting for her.
The story was always all about her and the angel has been honest from the beginning.

Synopsis: Karen is a beautiful young woman with a dark past, but she’s got potential and she knows it. Fresh out of prison, she fnds herself on the streets with a burning desire to turn her life around but no one to call for help. Eventually she fnds a haven at a shelter for women like herself. With the support of her new community of friends, Karen begins the journey of reconnecting with her estranged mother and her young daughter, and she is soon propelled to face the most diffcult truths of her life. But she’s determined to never give up. Set and shot in and around Port Adelaide, Here I Am is a moving and hopeful story about the strength and resilience of women.

“HERE I AM” Premiered earlier this year to a standing ovation at the Adelaide Film Festival

Rolling Stone (Ed Gibbs)
Four Stars ****
[Shai] Pittman boasts an undeniable screen presence, with her co-stars uniformly excellent … Some of the scenes in the women’s house are great fun, plus there’s an imaginative, edgy soundtrack … Smart, subtle and engaging.

HIA Shai Pittman_portraitShai Pittman (Leading Actress – ‘Karen’) will be Introducing the film, w/ Q&A after screening:
Shai started her acting career at the age of seven as a featured extra on a run-away bus in an episode of Police Rescue. She’s still got an on-set photo of her with Gary Sweet. In between she has featured as Cathy Freeman’s body double in an Earth Hour commercial, posed as an athlete on the billboards and postage stamps celebrating the Athens Olympics and played a supporting role in an episode of All Saints. Her most significant work is playing opposite Chris Haywood in an AFTRS short film, the celebrated two-hander Fuse in 2005. Shai, a Blacktown girl, is a water baby and loves diving for abalone with her Yuin family and friends on the South Coast of NSW.

Beck Cole – writer & director:
Hope and Forgiveness
For the past five years a character named Karen has lived in my head – she is in her mid” twenties, is a daughter and a mother and has just been released from prison. Yet the film is not about prison and I’ve never wanted it to be. It is a film about a young woman who has made mistakes and is in a very fragile place – on the outside, unwanted, alone and trying in her own way to make the right choices.
Here I Am has been a long journey for me but the reason for wanting to tell this story has always been the same – I strongly wanted to make a film about a family of women on the brink of no return. A family that had suffered loss, grief, anger and resentment but was glued together by love – and in this story love is a child.
I started writing the script soon after I’d had my first daughter. So I was drawn to making a film about mothers and their children. And I also thought that I wanted to deal with some of the difficulties that women have and experience throughout life – particularly women that live an underprivileged sort of life. And I wanted to create a story with a character that showed the difficult side of life but also a journey toward hope and the possibilities of a brighter future.
There are also many reasons why I needed to tell this story: politically I am concerned about the disproportionate number of Aboriginal people incarcerated in our country; personally I continue to consider my own life as an Aboriginal woman and my role as a mother; and creatively I am driven to create interesting roles and characters for Aboriginal women to play in a story that speaks beyond the realms of race and hopefully resonates with us all as people capable and worthy of love and forgiveness.

Kath Shelper – producer:
Humour, Friendship and the Third Wheel
Beck and I have been working together on this film during the past five years – intensively in production for the last year and intermittently developing the script prior to that. Whilst the various permutations of the story have changed over the years, there has always been the central character of Karen as the strong protagonist. Beck’s previous two short dramas (Flat and Plains Empty) have also featured strong female characters in isolation. Without dipping into amateur psychology, it’s not hard to see her fascination with the place of women in the world and I’m sure this is a theme she will continue to pursue.
We share a great friendship as well as a working relationship, both of which have developed over the past seven or so years we have been a team – along with our third wheel Warwick
Thornton (cinematographer, husband, collaborator, drinking partner). Together we have a terrible sense of humour, which often gets us into trouble. Laughing has got us through many trying times and I hope that audiences can appreciate the humour and joy in the film.
To my knowledge, this is the first feature film that has concentrated on urban Aboriginal women in a contemporary setting. Most films that have come before have been about blokes, set in the past or set in the regions. Here I Am is a rare insight into a world of women most people know little about, but which has a universality about it by the fact that they are all just getting on with their lives in the best way that they know how, hoping for a better future. And in some cases getting it.
