10th Arakwal NAIDOC Week Film Screening Programme – 90min
Welcome To Country – 10min / 2016 / Comedy Writer/Director: Dean Gibson | Producer: Helen Morrison When a hotshot public servant is sent to a remote Aboriginal community to prepare for the Prime Minister’s visit, he quickly learns the true meaning of Welcome to Country.
Vote Yes – 11min / 2013 / Drama Writer/Director: Nick Waterman | Producer: Melissa Beauford Starring: Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires) It’s May 27, 1967 – Australia’s referendum on Aboriginal rights. Two women unite as a family come to terms with the prospect of change.
Black Chook – 11min / 2015 / Drama Writer: Bruce Pascoe | Director: Dylan River | Producer: Belinda Mravicic Starring: Jack Charles & Brendan Cowell They were Australia’s bad days. Men killed other men and laughed. All that was left for the children of the dead was to remember; if they had the strength.
Corey The Warrior – 3min / 2017 / Documentary Director: Isabel Darling Yuin and Bundjalung man, Corey Stewart, shines as he tells the story of his new life as an artist. At 22 months old Corey Stewart suffers a severe brain injury in a car accident that tragically kills his mother. He has to learn to do everything again – and he learns to paint. Now an artist, Corey’s love of his family, nature, and his totems shape his paintings, which are as enchanting as he is.
Servant Or Slave – 57min / 2016 / Documentary Director: Steven McGregor | Writer/Producer: Mitchell Stanley & Hetti Perkins Bringing to light the heartbreaking experiences of Rita Wright, Rita Wenberg, Violet West, Adelaide Wenberg and Valerie Linow, Servant or Slave is a film of courage, strength and the fortitude to pursue justice for the crimes committed against them after being stolen from their families, trained to be domestic servants and forced into indentured labour. Theirs is a David and Goliath battle, not only for personal retribution, but also for the next generation of Aboriginal people to come.
‘Cultivating Murder’ Byron premiere screening is about the disastrous effects of broad-scale land clearing in Australia, & will be launched by Greens MLC Dr. Mehreen Faruqi who will also conduct the Q&A following the screening with the filmmaker Greg Miller of Film Projects.
‘Cultivating Murder’ is a new feature documentary that tells the heart-rending story of the murder of Glen Turner, a public servant working for the Office of Environment and Heritage, who was gunned down on the side of a public road in Croppa Creek, 40 kilometers from Moree in 2014.
Glen Turner was investigating illegal land clearing when he was murdered, and since his death we have seen the NSW Government throw out the Native Vegetation Act and replace it with legislation that will allow even greater broad-scale land clearing to occur, much as it has in Queensland. This film offers an insight into what large farming concerns and agribusiness see as the future and it does not include responsible land management and conservation of the natural environment. It reveals the pressure of recent rapid expansion in agribusiness as the laws protecting the environment are weakened across Australia.
Limited public access provisions currently apply to the Island Quarry while some key DA consent conditions are finalised.
During recent times iQ Inc has made substantial progress in addressing these conditions through constructing onsite works including:
– Ewingsdale Rd driveway access road-works, bike path & earth-bund landscaping as per Council approval are in the final planning stages.
– Driveway tarring completed & approved (2023)
– Construction of site shed (2022)
– Driveway traffic island constructed (2021)
– Driveway Sub-grade preparation & construct dish drain (2020)
– Installation of a 250 metre Western Boundary Fence (installed 2018-2019)
– Installation of a 150 metre Front Boundary Fence (installed 2016-2017)
– Installation of a 350 metre safety fence around the quarry waterhole. (installed early 2014-2015)
– Installation of a 2 kW Solar Pumping system (supplying water to the flow-forms water feature that oxygenates the water-body; & also to supply water for the gardens)
– Site perimeter fencing along Ewingsdale Rd frontage has been installed to assist with reserve management of safety & security.
It is important to note that during this time, private activities and functions such as weddings, ceremonies, receptions, small workshops & film shoots are still able to be held on the Reserve, subject to application and approval.
We look forward to a full re-opening of the Reserve to the public once all consent conditions for public events are completed.
In the interim, if you would like to volunteer or get involved in the community garden please contact us, or if you’re interested in receiving occasional updates please send us an email with: ‘Please add to iQ Updates’ in Subject line.

Friday 22nd Jan, Best Of International 1 programme, highlights includes:
OH-BE-JOYFUL United Kingdom / 14 min / 2015
WRI: Kayleigh Llewellyn
DIR: Susan Jacobson
PROD: Katie Campbell
On her birthday, the last thing Sophie (Kayleigh Llewellyn) wants to do is care for her wheelchair-bound grandmother, Rita (Sheila Reid). However, Rita is a lot sharper than her granddaughter thinks. Determined for Sophie to come to terms with her sexuality, the ever-cheeky Rita drags her to the supermarket, leaving smashed mandarins and garlic in their wake. It’s an endearing moment of bonding between the two, despite the generation gap. Oh Be Joyful is a heart-warming tale of love, family and acceptance.
AUTOS PORTRAITS (CARFACE) Canada / 4min / 2015
DIR: Claude Cloutier
PROD: Julie Roy
Carface is a whirling, twirling automotive waltz. To the tune of “Que Sera, Sera,” carefree cars cavort in all directions while the black ooze that fuels them is unremittingly pumped from Mother Earth. The ultimate orgiastic spectacle of our Big Oil–based empire. Let the games begin! The impact is all the more heightened by the film’s outlandish cartoon imagery. Shortlisted for best animated shorts category at the Oscars, Cloutier’s film is a biting commentary of a world threatened by climate change and declining natural resources.
Saturday 23rd Jan, Best Of Australian Shorts programme, highlights include:
NAN AND A WHOLE LOT OF TROUBLE Australia / 11min / 2015 WRI: Sue McPherson DIR: Dena Curtis PROD: Lois Randall (From Lennox Head)
Shot in Lismore, Tullera and Wardell Northern NSW. A whole lot of fun and set in ‘well groomed suburbia’, Dena Curtis’s film is a charming comic drama about a family in a spot of trouble. Nan (Noeleen Shearer), and granddaughter Fuzzy (Amba-Rose Atkinson) of Aboriginal and Irish descent, face off with Aunty Min (Pamela Young) after the passing of a close relative. Nan keeps a photo album of dead family members. Younger sister Min believes this morbid European tradition is culturally inappropriate. Told with warmth and humour, this fun short film tackles cultural taboos and indigenous tradition.
FLAT DADDY Australia / 16min / 2014
WRI / DIR: Matt Holcomb
PROD: Annie Kinnane
Life-size cut-outs of soldiers away in combat are used by military families to cope with their loved one’s absence. Eating dinner at the table with a life-size cut-out of your dad isn’t exactly ordinary. But for Kate (Kat Stewart) and daughter Cindy (Sophia Tsoltoudis), it’s their only way to fill the void while their absent father and husband Scott (Christian Clark) is on military duty. Based on an award-winning short story by Louise D’Arcy, Flat Daddy is a heartbreaking examination of the ups and downs of family in emotional upheaval.
