ABOUT FLiCKERFEST

Celebrating its 32nd year, Flickerfest, Australia’s only Academy® Qualifying and BAFTA-recognised short film festival, and the country’s largest Australian & International short film competition, screens the best of shorts from Australia and around the globe; ensuring the presentation of A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world.

Flickerfest screened for 10 days under the summer stars at Bondi Beach in late January 2022, now selected highlights of the most entertaining and innovative short films from around the world are touring Australia on a 50+ venue national tour from Feb – Oct 2023; with Byron shire being the first screenings after Bondi.

Flickerfest is screening for its 26th year in the Northern Rivers region in 2023 and will celebrate its 31st birthday since the festivals 1st ever screening in Balmain, Sydney back in 1991.

The Flickerfest 2023 tour will take place at the A&i Hall, screening a smorgasbord of the worlds and Australia’s best shorts over one big weekend handpicked from a record 3,200 entries received from over 100 countries for Flickerfest Bondi.

Along with the Byron All Shorts finalists screening, audiences will experience the best of short films from the Byron Region, Australia and around the World over 3 cinematic-packed days.

Following the Opening Party, Flickerfest is thrilled to present its Best Of International Shorts programme, a selection of film gems from our Academy® qualifying and BAFTA recognised competition in Bondi.
Programme & highlights include: a host of international highlights enjoying their Australian premieres are the Danish Academy-Award winning team Kim Magnusson and Anders Walter, who share their masterful filmmaking on a journey through the vast Greenlandic landscape in their powerful new drama ‘IVALU‘, & the delightful and surprising Canadian animation based on a true story, ‘The Flying Sailor‘, which were both this week nominated for the 2023 Oscars.

8pm – Best Of Australian Shorts

Flickerfest is thrilled to celebrate a diverse range of stories from across Australia that celebrate our unique identity and culture with our Best Of Australian Shorts programme, selected from 7 programmes in our Academy® Qualifying competition in Bondi.
Programme & highlights: a Northern Rivers short ‘Six Of One‘ starring Isabel Lucas (Transformers, Bosch & Rocket) written and directed by Minka Bleakley and ‘The Fritz‘, starring Trevor Jamieson (Storm Boy). Also include are Flickerfest 2023 awarded ‘Katele (Mudskipper)’ a film about longing for home set in Saibai Island, Torres Strait, winner of the Academy qualifying Best Australian Short Film; and the moving animation ‘Teacups’ winner of Best Australian Animated Short Film at Flickerfest 2023.

Saturday 18th February

4pm – Byron All Shorts- Northern Rivers Competition Finalists screening

Also returning is Byron All Shorts, for the 18th year presenting the Best Of Northern Rivers Shorts; encouraging audiences to experience the many amazing films & local stories that are produced in the region each year. Around 15 local short films will screen across this 105-minute programme which will celebrate an incredible range of themes and stories. Byron All Shorts is judged by an esteemed jury of local Northern Rivers industry practitioners. The awards ceremony will be held 15-20mins after the screening (time to allow the Jury to decide the winners) & will conclude by 7pm.

8pm – Short Laughs Comedy

Enjoy an evening of clever comedy from Australia and across the world with the Short Laughs Comedy programme.
Programme & highlights include: the delightfully quirky French comedy romance, ‘Born to Cry‘ where a man confronts his fears and gets the girl alongside an incredible band of followers’ and the stunning Australian animation ‘An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It‘ also just nominated for an Oscar in the Short Animation Category.

We are thrilled to share our official Flickerfest 2023 Tour trailer, celebrating yet another ode to an iconic film, ‘The Castle’. Rob Stitch’s classic celebrates 25 years this year as one of the most beloved Australian feature films of all time.

The Castle tells the story of a working class family from Melbourne who fight city hall after being told they must allow for infrastructural expansion. Now, 25 years on, the Flickerfest 2023 trailer presents our very own take on this classic story of family, home and the pressures of development in today’s time – with a nod to the successful community battle to save our Flickerfest home, the Bondi Pavilion, from privatisation.

Written and directed by Flickerfest alumni, Megan Smart (Wakefield, Peter Rabbit, Breathe) and co-written by George Pullar (Barons, A Place to Call Home), both of whom showcased their exceptional talents behind the camera in their delightful black comedy Stonefish, a world premiere at Flickerfest 2022.

We are excited to see this talented cast and crew bring their unique take to The Castle, a film that has carved its own unique place in the Australian imagination.

Our 2023 trailer was made possible by some incredible supporters including The Solid State, Spectrum Films, Digital City Studios, Panavision Sydney, Bullant Productions, Church Street Studios, Chicken and Chips Casting and Waverley Council.

A short film that is big on bravery. In the Northern Rivers flood of 2022 locals jumped into their boats to rescue people stranded in floodwaters. This film is a tribute to those tinnie heroes.

An extract from the forthcoming multi-screen epic ‘Confusing Them With Our Joy’, this short film features the first person to be arrested trying to stop CSG in the Northern Rivers, Davey Bob Ramsey, performing his great song ‘Leave it in the Ground’ at the Doubtful Creek blockade. Includes footage from the multi-year campaign which culminated at Bentley.

Baŋgay Lore, meaning spear in the Dyirabal language of Far North QLD, showcases how aboriginal culture is perceived when it is performed on stage, and when it is expressed in everyday society. Exploring limitations wrongly placed on the expression of aboriginal culture, it follows the journey of a young aboriginal dancer as he struggles with acceptance of his culture outside of the theatre.

A bonus from the forthcoming multi-screen epic ‘Confusing Them With Our Joy’, this short film captures a joyous musical moment when a constellation of musical stars appeared at the Bentley blockade, and played an unauthorised show beside the highway.

BYRON ALL SHORTS 2023 Awards

The Byron All Shorts screening is on Sat 18th February, 4pm, shortly followed by the Byron All Shorts Awards presentation which will be held 30mins after the Byron All Shorts screening & will conclude by 7pm.

These amazing local films screen to a packed house each year, with finalists from the Northern Rivers region hotly contesting for prizes, that recognise excellence in short film making from the Northern Rivers region.

THE JURY: Byron All Shorts will be judged at the screening by an esteemed jury of film practitioners.
(The awards presentation is held 30mins after the Byron All Shorts screening & will conclude by 7pm).

Lisa O’Meara is CEO for Screenworks and has lived and worked in the Northern Rivers, supporting regional screen practitioners for more than 16 years. Prior to this, Lisa designed national and international strategies to take a broad range of screen productions and games to buyers, audiences and consumers. She launched the SBS TV series Under the Skin (Tony Ayres, Belinda Chayko) and the Network Nine children’s series Spellbinder (Ron Saunders) to national audiences and international markets. She designed national distribution strategies for games including Diabolo (Blizzard) Riven (Broderbund) as well as launching the Disney, Barbie and Hasbro CD rom brands in Australia. Her roles have included Marketing Executive at Screen Australia, Marketing Manager at Tech Pacific, Programs and Operations Manager at Screenworks and National Manager for Careers and Enterprise at SAE Creative Media Insitute. Lisa is a committed advocate for regional screen practitioners.

Nicole Sullivan was awarded the 2019 Regional Producer Elevator Program supported by Screenworks, Create NSW and Screen Producers Australia and has worked across many roles in the creative sector across a wide range of platforms and is now a Production Executive with Tilt Media & Entertainment. A passionate storyteller, Nicole has written, produced and directed. Her micro documentary, Jazmin has been screened globally, receiving a judges special mention in the Byron Bay All Shorts (part of the Flickerfest schedule), A Commended Best Documentary Award at the Women of Fifty Film Festival 2022 (UK). Screened at the Melbourne Queer Festival 2022 and has just been officially selected for Queer Screen’s 30th Mardi Gras Film Festival, 2023.

Bronwyn Kidd is the director of Flickerfest since 1998, Bronwyn has curated hundreds of short film programmes for both the festival, its national touring programme and many other international film festivals including The London Australian Film Festival at The Barbican. Since 2002 she has been one of the management committee members and key organisers of the International Short Film Conference [ISFC], the international body that advises on short films festivals and protocol throughout the world. Bronwyn has participated on the jury of many respected short film competitions internationally including the World Wide Short Film Festival Toronto Canada, Grimstad Norway and the International Short Film Festival of Drama Greece. In 2002 Bronwyn founded the Flickerfest Short Film Bureau to distribute Australian short films internationally. The Flickerfest Short film Bureau now represents over 200 of Australia’s best shorts and has successfully made many sales to all known territories and broadcasters and platforms buying shorts worldwide. Bronwyn has successfully Executive Produced 3 series of Flickerfest On Extra a short film programme dedicated to Australian short film including all online content across websites and other cross platform portals.
