ABOUT

Celebrating its 28th year, Flickerfest, Australia’s leading Academy® Award accredited and BAFTA-recognised Short Film Festival, and the country’s largest Australian & International short film competition, screens the best of shorts from Australia and around the globe; ensuring the presentation of A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world.

Flickerfest screens for 10 days under the summer stars at Bondi Beach from 11-20 January 2019, with selected highlights the most entertaining and innovative short films from around the world touring Australia on a 50+ venue national tour from Jan – May 2019; with Byron shire being the first screenings after Bondi.

Flickerfest is screening for its 21st year in the Northern Rivers region in 2019 and will celebrate its 28th birthday since the festivals 1st ever screening in Balmain, Sydney back in 1991.

The Flickerfest 2019 tour will take place at the air-cooled Mullum Civic Hall, screening a smorgasbord of the worlds and Australia’s best shorts over one big weekend handpicked from a record 2,700 entries from 99 countries.

Along with the Byron All Shorts finalists screening, audiences will experience the best of short films from the Byron Region, Australia and around the World over 3 cinematic-packed days.

Come celebrate amazing independent film-making in Mullumbimby from the 25-27 Jan.

Friday 25th January

7pm – Opening Night Party

Join us as we celebrate our 21th year in the Northern Rivers to launch our festival of short films in style with a fully catered opening night party including food, music & drinks from our partners Rosnay Organic Wines, Young Henrys Beer and Parkers Organic Juices.

8pm – Best Of International Shorts

Following the Opening Party, Flickerfest is thrilled to present its Best Of International Shorts programme, a selection of film gems from our Academy® Accredited and BAFTA recognised competition in Bondi.
Highlights include: the moving and insightful short film Magic Alps from Italy that tells the moving story of an Afghani refugee who arrives in Italy with his goat and seeks political asylum for both of them. Also featuring is Phone Duty from the Russian Federation, the winner of Best dramatic short at Tribeca Film Festival 2018. ‘A Donbass rebel fighter with a nom de guerre Cat is ordered to sit on phone duty, but it’s not as easy as it may seem’

Saturday 26th January

4pm – Byron All Shorts

Also returning is Byron All Shorts, for the 14th year presenting the Best Of Northern Rivers Shorts; encouraging audiences to experience the many amazing films & local stories that are produced in the region each year. Around 15 local short films will screen across this 120-minute programme which will celebrate an incredible range of themes and stories. Byron All Shorts is judged by an esteemed jury of local Northern Rivers industry luminaries.

8pm – Best Of Australian Shorts

Flickerfest is thrilled to celebrate a diverse range of stories from across Australia that celebrate our unique identity and culture with our Best Of Australian Shorts programme, selected from 7 programmes in our Academy® Accredited competition in Bondi.

Highlights include: Desert Dash (view trailer) a wonderful creative comedy by Gracie Otto. ‘On the outskirts of Australia, Opals are now the currency for survival in the game of Desert Dash. When a feisty heroine gets the opportunity to ‘level up’ there is no choice but to win. Game On’. Also featured is the delightful indigenous drama from the NT Lil Bois, by Grant Thompson, the first short film in the traditional language of Ngandi. ‘After swimming with his friends in a billabong, a nervous little boy returns to his camp and discovers everything has changed. His family is missing. With his friends, he heads out into the wilderness to find them’. Comedian & actor Paul McDermott makes a return to Flickerfest, with his beautifully crafted & haunting animation Ghostbear, which looks at the worlds disappearing species.

Sunday 27th January

8pm – Short Laughs Comedy

Enjoy an evening of clever comedy & chortle you way through a selection of off-kilter funny shorts from Australia and across the world with the Short Laughs Comedy programme.

Highlights include: Animal Behaviour (view trailer), dealing with what comes naturally isn’t easy, especially for animals. In Animal Behaviour, the latest animated short from the Oscar®-winning team of Alison Snowden and David Fine (Bob’s Birthday), five animals meet regularly to discuss their inner angst in a group therapy session led by Dr. Clement, a canine psychotherapist. And there is, How It Feels To Be Hungover, a man wakes up at a clinic specialised in malignant hangovers. The doctor prescribes 600 ml of ice cream and two action comedies, but also shares some news, which doesn’t make him feel any better…

As Mullumbimby is our hometown I’m always really excited to be presenting these very exciting, entertaining and inspiring short films hand-picked for local audiences at our local tour event. Our Mullumbimby Flickerfest is both a celebration of film and a great community networking event where people who love films and great stories can come together over the weekend and enjoy inspiring films from the Northern Rivers, across Australia and the world, encouraging both discussion and connection. I’m really looking forward to it!

We will also be presenting the Best of Northern Rivers Shorts at the Byron All Shorts finalist’s screening approx 15 local finalists, selected from around 60 entries each year, showcasing a wonderful new collection of creative shorts from our very talented local filmmakers on a range of themes that reflect Northern Rivers life including surfing, music, comedy, love and everything in between.

A Different Gallery – Dir/Prod: Susie Forster / 10min
Every three years Samantha Moss turns the riverside & parklands at Brunswick Heads into a natural sculpture walk that locals & visitors alike are falling in love with. Find out how this surprising exhibition marries nature, art & community in a different way to a gallery. (Premiere screening)

An alien from a distant planet arrives in the Northern Rivers NSW, where he encounters some of the locals. (Premiere screening)

A group of ‘artivists’ trying to stop gasfields from destroying the Pilliga Forest in NSW show how important it is to stick together. A thank you present to everyone standing up to protect the places they love. (Premiere screening)

Spirit Walker – Dir/Prod: Darius Devas / 22min
The Spirit Walker, tells the inspirational story of 27 year old indigenous man Clinton Pryor’s 6,000km walk from Perth to Canberra to meet with the Prime Minister in the name of justice for his people. The film climaxes with Clinton’s meeting with Prime Minister and offers a message of hope.

The first occupation of the earliest white settlers in northern New South Wales was to cut down trees for house and shipbuilding timbers. Forest giants, revered by local Aboriginal people as Grandfather and Grandmother trees, were felled, floated downriver to the sea, shipped away and sold.

Community movements unite beyond political affiliation to help protect our life support systems on Earth.
Two women talk about their roles within a movement of untold thousands, sharing insights into what sustains them. (NSW Premiere screening)

A documentary that gives an insight in to the sustainability of the surf industry, starting with the basic element need, the surfboard.

Seeking Safety – Wri/Dir/Prod: Lizzie Kirkpatrick / 6min – Cape Byron Steiner
Seeking Safety reflects the serious social conscience of its 14 year old film-maker. It contrasts the lives of two unlikely friends, a girl growing up in the benign safety of Byron Bay, and an Afghan refugee, who crossed the seas by boat to seek asylum in Australia at a very young age. Abdul, the subject of the film, couldn’t be photographed because of fears of retribution by the Taliban but his words are meaningful, haunting and unforgettable. (Premiere screening)

Three young girls face a reality where men abuse and disrespect them on a daily basis. It’s not a dream, or a fantasy world. It’s real life. The only solace they can find, is in each other. (Premiere screening)

An intimate character study of 90 year old, Libby Mills from Putney, Vermont USA, who’s heartfelt story takes one on an emotional journey of love, loss and resilience. (Premiere Screening)

In Death Valley’s ghost town, a dancer brings her gilded dream to life. (Northern Rivers Premiere screening)

A group of plucky dolls initiate an emotional break-up in a last ditch attempt to escape a toxic relationship.
