‘Cultivating Murder’ Byron premiere screening is about the disastrous effects of broad-scale land clearing in Australia, & will be launched by Greens MLC Dr. Mehreen Faruqi who will also conduct the Q&A following the screening with the filmmaker Greg Miller of Film Projects.
‘Cultivating Murder’ is a new feature documentary that tells the heart-rending story of the murder of Glen Turner, a public servant working for the Office of Environment and Heritage, who was gunned down on the side of a public road in Croppa Creek, 40 kilometers from Moree in 2014.
Glen Turner was investigating illegal land clearing when he was murdered, and since his death we have seen the NSW Government throw out the Native Vegetation Act and replace it with legislation that will allow even greater broad-scale land clearing to occur, much as it has in Queensland. This film offers an insight into what large farming concerns and agribusiness see as the future and it does not include responsible land management and conservation of the natural environment. It reveals the pressure of recent rapid expansion in agribusiness as the laws protecting the environment are weakened across Australia.
Limited public access provisions currently apply to the Island Quarry while some key DA consent conditions are finalised.
During recent times iQ Inc has made substantial progress in addressing these conditions through constructing onsite works including:
– Ewingsdale Rd driveway access road-works, bike path & earth-bund landscaping as per Council approval are in the final planning stages.
– Driveway tarring completed & approved (2023)
– Construction of site shed (2022)
– Driveway traffic island constructed (2021)
– Driveway Sub-grade preparation & construct dish drain (2020)
– Installation of a 250 metre Western Boundary Fence (installed 2018-2019)
– Installation of a 150 metre Front Boundary Fence (installed 2016-2017)
– Installation of a 350 metre safety fence around the quarry waterhole. (installed early 2014-2015)
– Installation of a 2 kW Solar Pumping system (supplying water to the flow-forms water feature that oxygenates the water-body; & also to supply water for the gardens)
– Site perimeter fencing along Ewingsdale Rd frontage has been installed to assist with reserve management of safety & security.
It is important to note that during this time, private activities and functions such as weddings, ceremonies, receptions, small workshops & film shoots are still able to be held on the Reserve, subject to application and approval.
We look forward to a full re-opening of the Reserve to the public once all consent conditions for public events are completed.

The Byron All Shorts programme is an amazing showcase of approx 120min of the best of local short films & screened to a capacity house of 330 people last year.

THE JURY: Byron All Shorts will be judged at the screening by an esteemed jury of industry practitioners including:
Mandy Nolan (Artist/Comedian/Writer) Multi-talented, accomplished comedian, artist and journalist. A stand up comedian for well over 28 years, & self proclaimed expert on all matters feminine. Nolan has also been a contributor for Wendy Harmer’s Online magazine The Hoopla and has been a featured guest on ABC’s Q&A and SBS’s Mums The Word.
A thrice published author Nolan’s previous titles with Finch include ‘What I Would Do If I Were You’ & ‘Boyfriend’s We’ve all Had and Shouldn’t have.’ Sydney Morning Herald’s Bruce Elder called Nolan ‘the country’s sharpest and wittiest comedic columnist’. In 2015 alongside an 8 date East Coast book launch she also appeared at Bellingen Writers Festival, Byron Writers Festival, Melbourne Writers Festival and the Romance Writers of Australia Conference.
Anne Chesher (Producer/Lecturer) Creative Media Producer for the film and television industry and also Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of Film at SAE Creative Media Institute. Anne was instrumental in establishing National Geographic Channel in Australia on the Foxtel platform from its launch in 1997. During recent years Anne has produced curriculum based interactive creative media for broadcast drama, documentary and online platforms on award winning projects such as Showtime’s Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet, SBS’s Go Back To Where You Came From, ABC’s Mabo and online ABC Splash.
Anne is also Associate Producer for Gibbs Media working with an executive team developing fifty-two animated episode series and multiplatform features of the Australian iconic book Snugglepot and Cuddlepie for Australian and global television markets.
David Bradbury (Documentary Filmmaker) Two-time Academy Award-nominated director and producer, a documentary legend whose films have taken us around the planet and deep into the heart of individuals with extraordinary stories about war, uprising, injustice and exploitation.
David is the sole creative force behind ground-breaking documentaries such as “Frontline” about war cinematographer and correspondent Neil Davis who covered the Vietnam war for 11 years, “A Hard Rain” and “Blowin’ In The Wind”, both exploring the impact of ‘depleted’ uranium in the Gulf war. And his most recent film, “The Crater”, about Vietnam War conscript Brian Cleaver’s redemptive journey to locate the missing bodies of 42 enemy soldiers Cleaver’s company killed in one night during the war.

On her birthday, the last thing Sophie (Kayleigh Llewellyn) wants to do is care for her wheelchair-bound grandmother, Rita (Sheila Reid). However, Rita is a lot sharper than her granddaughter thinks. Determined for Sophie to come to terms with her sexuality, the ever-cheeky Rita drags her to the supermarket, leaving smashed mandarins and garlic in their wake. It’s an endearing moment of bonding between the two, despite the generation gap. Oh Be Joyful is a heart-warming tale of love, family and acceptance.

Shot in Lismore, Tullera and Wardell Northern NSW. A whole lot of fun and set in ‘well groomed suburbia’, Dena Curtis’s film is a charming comic drama about a family in a spot of trouble. Nan (Noeleen Shearer), and granddaughter Fuzzy (Amba-Rose Atkinson) of Aboriginal and Irish descent, face off with Aunty Min (Pamela Young) after the passing of a close relative. Nan keeps a photo album of dead family members. Younger sister Min believes this morbid European tradition is culturally inappropriate. Told with warmth and humour, this fun short film tackles cultural taboos and indigenous tradition.

Flickerfest brings its ‘Short Films – Licensed To Thrill’ into the Northern Rivers from the 23rd to the 25th January, for it’s 17th year screening a smorgasbord of short films; along with Byron All Shorts finalists, audiences will experience the best of short films from the Byron Region, Australia and around the World over 3 days at the A & i Hall Bangalow.
Celebrating 24 years of short film excellence Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Academy® Accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival, ensuring that we continue to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world.
Over 2,400 entries were received for Flickerfest 2015, and only the top 110 shorts are selected in official competition, all handpicked to represent the most innovative, creative and cutting edge short films being produced in the world today.
The calibre of this year’s program is undeniable with several films screening at some of the worlds most prominent and revered film festivals including Sundance and Cannes.
At Flickerfest Bangalow we will be screening an entertaining, inspiring and award winning range of 30 Flickerfest shorts over the festival, many of which are World or Australian premieres, giving local Flickerfest audiences the first look at the hottest short films in the world today. We will also be presenting the best of Northern Rivers shorts at the Byron All Shorts finalists screening, which last year played to a capacity audience of 400 people.

Heath Davis is an award winning filmmaker whose films have screened and won awards at various international film festivals including Telluride, Tribeca and Flickerfest.
Since graduating from the University of Western Sydney, Davis has written and directed the short films Spoon Man, Bella, Bee Sting and Rabbit as well as numerous music videos and TVCs with Sydney based production house Scope Red.
Most recently Davis directed the concert movie for ARIA winners The Jezabels “The Jezabels Live at the Hordern” as well as the upcoming feature film “Broke” starring Steve Le Marquand, Max Cullen, Claire Van Der Boom, Steve Bastoni, Justin Rosniak, William Zappa and Brendan Cowell.
This workshop will take you on a journey from when you conceptualise a film idea through how to get it to market, with two industry experts.

MARY TORRENS & THE GODS OF WHEAT ST (ABC Open short) – 4:45min Wri/Dir/Prod: Jeanti St Clair
Mary Torrens is a Bundjalung woman from Casino, whose partner John Bell is the writer of the Indigenous television series, which was filmed in Northern NSW. When she was recruited as the Extras Casting Co-ordinator for the drama series, it was an entirely new role for the former social worker. I spent two days shadowing Mary on set with fellow ABC Open contributor J.J. Cobbo on camera with the invaluable support of ABC Open North Coast Producer, Catherine Marciniak. Mary’s strong community connections with the Casino and Kyogle mobs made her the ideal choice to take on the task of Extras Casting Coordinator for the six-part series.

The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege in modern warfare – lasting over 3 years & slaying over 10,000 people. At the height of the siege two young lovers, Admira & Bosko, Muslim & Sebian (Christian) respestively, tried to escape across the one bridge in the city. This is a short photographic history of this event using original war photography set to a soundtrack of an original song by Karena Wyn-Moylan which forms the basis of her radio documentary ‘Memories Of Sarajevo: The Myths & The Legends’. Recently widowed small town resident and bookstore owner ‘William’ lives a lonely existence. Emotionally burdened by the tragic loss of his partner and son he now struggles with the monotony of his daily grind and feelings of helplessness. During a lunch break he stumbles across what he believes could be a way to help conquer his crippling emotions and feelings of isolation. Could Williams plan of creating ‘mirror’ images of his sorely missed loved ones, ultimately provide him with another chance of happiness? Or is his idea doomed from the start? A short about a Brisbane trans-gender woman’s transition, has screened at 33 festivals worldwide. A story of transition – from male to female, and from despondency to happiness. Violet lives in small bedsit & spends what money she has on ‘whitening agents’ in an effort to blend in. But Violet is about to get a life changing visit from her past.

This is something that every Australian, whether original or non-indigenous should hear.

Flickerfest brings ‘Short Films With Soul’ into the Northern Rivers from the 24th-26th January for it’s 16th year screening a smorgasbord of shorts from the Byron Region, Australia and around the world over 3 jam-packed days at the A&I Hall Bangalow.
Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Academy® Accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival, ensuring that it continues to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world.
Over 2300 entries were received for Flickerfest 2014, and only the top 100 shorts are selected in official competition, all handpicked to represent the most innovative, creative and cutting edge short films being produced in the world today.

The Byron All Shorts were held on Saturday 25th Jan, with 13 finalists from the Northern Rivers region hotly contesting for prizes that recognise excellence in short film making.
These amazing local films screened to a capacity house at the A&i Hall Bangalow as part of the Flickerfest 23rd International Short Film Festival 2014.
The awards were selected by the esteemed jury of local film makers including indigenous writer Jon Bell, local film maker Sharon Shostak & local film maker and Flickerfest festival Director Bronwyn Kidd.

THE JURY
These local films will be judged by the esteemed jury: Jon Bell, Sharon Shostak & Bronwyn Kidd. The awards will be presented on Sunday night prior to the Best Of Australian Shorts.
Jon Bell, Writer: Indigenous writer Jon Bell hails from the town of Casino on the North Coast of NSW. Jon created and wrote the drama series The Gods of Wheat Street with Every Cloud Productions for ABC’s Indigenous unit. His other television credits include the first series of Redfern Now with Jimmy McGovern Story producing for Blackfella Films, and is also wrote on the second series premiering late 2013. Jon is in development on a number of television projects.
Jon wrote and directed The Chuck In, a ten minute short film supported through Screen Australia’s new short film initiative: FLASH BLACK. The Chuck In screened at the Sydney Film Festival and also screened at the ImagiNative Film Festival in Toronto and screened in the Australian competition programme at Flickerfest 23rd International Short Film Festival 2014 in Bondi.
Jon’s first short, And Justice for One, was made with a budget of $2000 using equipment supplied by Metro Screen, with Lois Randall as producer. His second short Two Big Boys (2007) was supported through Screen Australia Indigenous unit’s initiative A Bit of Black Business and was produced by Kath Shelper.
Jon’s new short The Chuck In screens in Flickerfest’s Best Of Australian Shorts on 26th Jan 8.30pm at Bangalow A&I Hall & around the country at 50 venues on the Flickerfest 2014 tour.
Sharon Shostak, Filmmaker: Victorian film industry trained and with two degrees in film, Sharon Shostak’s independent filmmaking gained wings in 2004 with a win of Best Film at the New York Short Film Festival for her 9 minute digital short The Deep Pool.
Since then she has worked mainly in documentary, education and music video clips. In 2011 Shostak wrote, directed and edited the independent documentary feature The Echo Doco – Born To Be Trouble, as well as her 2012 dramatic short feature Tish Ho, winner of The Triangle Award for Excellence In Originality from the Colombia Gorge International Film Festival, USA.
Currently contracted as the online filmmaker for Echonet Daily, she shoots, edits and produces short documentary clips about events in the local community on a weekly basis. Shostak also produces longer commissioned pieces for Lismore Regional Gallery, including the recent Not Quite Square – owner built houses in the Northern Rivers, and tutors primary school students in devising, creating and acting in their own digital short dramas.
Bronwyn Kidd, Flickerfest Director: As the director of Flickerfest for the 17th year Bronwyn has curated hundreds of short film programmes for both the festival, its national touring programme and many other international film festivals including The London Australian Film Festival at The Barbican. Since 2002 she has been one of the management committee members and key organisers of the International Short Film Conference [ISFC], the international body that advises on short films festivals and protocol throughout the world.
Recently Bronwyn has participated on the jury of many respected short film competitions internationally including the World Wide Short Film Festival Toronto Canada, Grimstad Norway and the International Short Film Festival of Drama Greece.
In 2002 Bronwyn founded the Flickerfest Short Film Bureau to distribute Australian short films internationally. The Flickerfest Short film Bureau now represents over 200 of Australia’s best shorts and has successfully made many sales to all known territories and broadcasters and platforms buying shorts worldwide.
Bronwyn has successfully Executive Produced 3 series of Flickerfest On Extra a short film programme dedicated to Australian short film including all online content across websites and other cross platform portals.
